Brighton has always been a city that champions creativity and innovation. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s home to an inspiring and growing network of female entrepreneurs. From first-time founders testing the waters to seasoned leaders running established businesses, women across the city are definitely making their mark on Brighton’s business landscape!
However, starting and scaling a business is rarely straightforward. Women often face unique challenges – whether it’s overcoming funding gaps, balancing personal and professional responsibilities, or finding the right networks for support. That’s where Brighton’s vibrant network of female-focused entrepreneurial groups steps in, creating spaces in which local women can grow, connect and learn together.
Empowering Through Connection
At the heart of Brighton’s entrepreneurial scene are initiatives like Networking in Brighton, Co-Women, and Thrive Meetups. These groups offer much more than just networking events; they act as vital support systems where women can share knowledge, tackle challenges, and celebrate their business wins.
Female entrepreneurs often work harder and longer to prove themselves, juggling responsibilities like finances, wellbeing, and childcare. Many organizations are now working to challenge this, offering more than just business-focused events. It is hoped that by making these opportunities more readily available across Brighton, local women will be able to build lasting relationships with like-minded peers and connect with those who are dealing with similar issues.
Gaining Local Insight
We recently spoke with the team behind Networking in Brighton – a local women’s business lunch club – to discuss their mission, current challenges and their aspirations for supporting the city’s female founders and entrepreneurs.
Held at the elegant Hotel du Vin, Networking in Brighton runs a welcoming networking club, bringing together female entrepreneurs on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
“It’s so inspiring to see other women have the courage to develop their own businesses. Our events incorporate support, education and business development, to provide a truly nurturing environment for women entrepreneurs,” says Dawn Hutchings, one of the club’s organisers. “Over the years, it has been such a pleasure to watch the individuals and their businesses, grow and mature, and to play such an important role in our local communities and economy.”
Networking in Brighton aim to understand the unique challenges women in business face and are committed to creating a space where they can connect and thrive. “Because women interact differently and need a different type of networking which is much more supportive,” explains Hilary Harrold. “It needs to focus on both gaining business and supporting each other in business growth and the challenges female business owners face.”
Helen Guinness, another organiser, emphasises the value of creating these connections. “Having spent my younger years campaigning with the Women’s Liberation Movement, I am committed to encouraging and supporting women in every way I can, especially women leaders. Our club is a forum and springboard for women to succeed on equal terms in all walks of life.”
Networking in Brighton offers a refreshing mix of learning, collaboration, and fun. Members are encouraged to embrace every part of their entrepreneurial journey – challenges, achievements, and everything in between! Find out more about their next event on the 4th December and sign up here.
