Summary of the role

Sussex Innovation is recruiting for an assistant management accountant. You’ll be part of a finance team that provides accounting services in-house and to a variety of different growing start-ups who make up our membership. Reporting to our Head of Finance, you will ensure that deliverables for our clients and ourselves are accurate and on time, including bookkeeping, VAT returns, balance sheet reconciliations or any other financial assistance.

What we are looking for:

This role would suit a part-qualified candidate with experience of working in practice or for a busy accounts department with knowledge of cashbook / ledger maintenance, reconciliations and confident in managing high volumes of data. You will have strong systems and IT skills and excellent attention to detail, and as an assistant management accountant, you must have a good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and accounting adjustments.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Improving and streamlining processes for new and existing clients.
  • Bookkeeping for clients as well as in-house.
  • Filing of VAT Returns.
  • Ability to liaise with clients regarding technical aspects of accounting along with developing a strong working relationship.
  • Preparation of balance sheet reconciliation as well as year-end working papers.
  • Ad-hoc tasks, including support with audits.
  • Opportunity to be part of internally held workshops and training.
  • Working alongside the wider support team to bring financial/accounting knowledge to joint projects.

Essential capabilities include:

  • Part-qualified or studying towards ACCA qualification.
  • Proven experience working in a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles and practice.
  • Intermediate Excel skills.

Desirable capabilities include:

  • Experience using Xero software.

Location: You will be based at our Sussex Innovation headquarters on the University of Sussex campus in Falmer (close to Brighton) with opportunities to work remotely.
