Looking beyond technical know-how to knowledge practices within art and culture
By Professor Geoff Cox PhD, Professor of Art and Computational Culture, School of Arts and Creative Industries, LSBU
Description: Software Studies is an interdisciplinary field that has developed to better understand the social and political effects of computational objects, processes, practices, and infrastructures. The lecture takes its point of departure in previous research projects and publications, and elaborates on current interests that include experimental publishing, computational aesthetics, and machine vision. What is at stake is how forms of power are operationalised through computational processes, and as such there is a perceived need to look beyond the acquisition of technical know-how alone to knowledge practices more commonly associated with art and culture.
Biography: Geoff Cox is Professor of Art and Computational Culture, co-Director of Centre for the Study of the Networked Image, and co-Director of MA Curating Art and Public Programmes (in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery). His research interest in software studies and contemporary aesthetics is reflected in the collaborative publications Speaking Code (MIT Press, 2013), Aesthetic Programming (Open Humanities Press, 2020), and Live Coding (MIT Press, 2022).
