The Light and Sound Quiz Show

5 March @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

The University of Sussex's logo

Light is both a particle and a wave? We all know that: there is no need for a Universe lecture about this. Very few know, however, that so is sound. If this is the case, why then we live in a society based on light technologies?

In this interactive lecture, we will discover what acoustic metamaterials are and, more importantly, how they are bridging the gap between light and sound. We will discover how they are changing the way we manage sound (and noise) in hospitals, offices and cinemas. Come and see sound like you have never before!

About the speaker

Professor Gianluca Memoli is a physicist, an engineer and, according to his kids, an inventor. At Sussex, he works at the interface between people and technology, where science becomes everyday gadgets. In his spare time, he has founded a company (Metasonixx) to bring his science to people. He is passionate about science communication and has many science festivals and a couple of TEDx lectures under his belt. Gianluca received the National Award for Communicating Acoustics to the public in 2013.

Sussex Universe

Sussex Universe is the public lecture series from the science schools at the University of Sussex. Lectures take place every two weeks during the Autumn and Spring teaching semesters. The lectures are completely free to attend and are accessible to a broad audience with no background knowledge.

Drop-ins are still welcome, but we recommend booking in advance to secure your spot. Book your place now.
