The Big Debate: Is Brighton’s creative sector an undervalued powerhouse?

Brighton is an arts and culture powerhouse. It’s home to hundreds of artists and a thriving creative, digital and tech sector. Creativity is what our city has become known for and one of the foundations for the vibrant start-up scene over the last decade.

Arts and culture connect communities, it contributes to how we feel, not just how we think, about the city. It gives Brighton it’s intangible inherent identity – but it’s also stretched, frustrated, challenged. A fragility persists. As a city, we are the victim of our own success – higher rents often pushing artists and creatives out.

Are we doing enough to protect what makes us unique? Is the creative sector in Brighton undervalued and untapped? What creative clusters are thriving, and which ones are merely surviving? Are we championing the skills to nurture a new generation of talent?

On 28 November, 5.30-7.30pm at BHASVIC we’re bringing together a panel of big thinkers, creatives, visionaries and do-ers for debate and discussion.

We’ll look at how the creative sector is well placed to help with some of the challenges facing cities like climate change; social isolation; even growth and expansion – plus look beyond Brighton to other cities that have harnessed and embraced a different way of solving problems and nurturing creativity.

Join us on 28 November to contribute your ideas, perspectives and knowledge while you listen and learn from others with an open mind.

Chaired by Professor Robin Banerjee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global and Civic Engagement, and Co-chair of the Culture Alliance.
