The Statuesque Breakfast
Our May speaker Alison Lapper MBE has faced incredible challenges throughout her life.
Born with no arms and shortened legs, she grew up in specialist institutions. Despite her disability, she longed to become an artist, which she achieved by painting with her mouth and feet. She has a first class degree in Fine Arts from the University of Brighton.
Alison shot to fame in 2005 when a 15ft statue of “Alison Lapper pregnant” went on display on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square. It sparked widespread public debate over the 18 months it was there. Most importantly, it raised disability awareness.
Alison has appeared in many documentaries and is now, among other things, pursuing a career as a TV presenter.
At our May breakfast, she will talk about her journey, the obstacles she has overcome…and what it was like seeing an enormous, naked statue of herself in central London.
