The ‘Keeping Mum’ breakfast
It has been a difficult year for many independent shops as they battle rising expenses plus a cost of living crisis. We’re delighted that our final breakfast speaker of 2023 is someone whose store has bucked the trend. Emma Draper owns Velvet, a mini department store in Hove which has enjoyed its most successful year yet.
Emma and her mother set up Velvet in 2000 in the North Laine and the shop moved several times before settling in its current premises. Emma is a mum of three sons who have inspired her success. She has been determined to show them that women are strong and capable, and fully able to juggle motherhood and a successful business by themselves.
Velvet has a staff of 16 women, with Emma’s mum, who’s now 80, still doing the bookkeeping.
At the breakfast, Emma will talk about her business journey including her early career in marketing and PR. She’ll reveal her inner resilience through recessions, divorce, bereavement, illness, single parenthood, covid and lockdowns. She’ll also discuss female entrepreneurship, her passion for fashion, interiors and retail – and what it’s like to work with your mum.
