Inclusive Sussex: In Conversation with Dame Nicola Dandridge DBE and Dr Omar Khan, exploring the themes of intergenerational justice

The fourth event for our ‘Inclusive Sussex: In Conversation’ series, will be featuring Professor Nicola Dandridge and Dr Omar Khan, two very significant individuals in higher education and equality.

After a career as an equalities lawyer and as Chief Executive of the HE sector’s Equality Challenge Unit, Professor Dandridge was appointed Chief Executive of Universities UK and then, upon its creation, the first Chief Executive of the Office for Students (OfS). She is now Professor of Practice in HE Policy at Bristol University. Dr Khan was formerly Director of the Runneymede Trust, Britain’s oldest race equality organisation, and is now Chief Executive of TASO (Transforming Access and Student Outcomes in Higher Education).

They will be joined by academics from the School of Educational and Social Work and will be exploring the themes of intergenerational justice and equality.

The panel includes:

· Professor David Ruebain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Culture, Equality and Inclusion)

· Dr Emily Danvers, Senior Lecturer in Higher Education Pedagogies

· Professor Janet Boddy, Professor of Child, Youth and Family Studies

· Matt Johnson, postgraduate researcher and Head of Research at the Runnymede Trust

Dame Nicola Dandridge DBE is an equalities lawyer and was the first Chief Executive of the Office for Students between July 2017 and April 2022. Before that, she was Chief Executive of Universities UK and Chief Executive of Equality Challenge Unit (the UK higher education sector’s EDI policy and research agency). Nicola, who is Professor of Practice in HE Policy at Bristol University, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2015 for services to higher education and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2023 New Year Honours, also for services to higher education.

Dr Omar Khan is Chief Executive of TASO (Transforming Access and Student Outcomes in Higher Education). He has extensive experience working on social justice issues and was previously director at Britain’s oldest race equality organisation, the Runnymede Trust. Omar was appointed as Chair of Trust for London in April 2023.

This event will take place from 5.30pm on Wednesday 28 February 2024 at Bramber House, Level 3, on campus. Following the discussion, please feel free to stay and join us for a short drinks reception.
