Kindness in the workplace: Benefits and barriers

How important is kindness to you and your business? Is it a value you hold dear? How is kindness valued?

Join us for a lively debate and meet Dr Gillian Sandstrom, senior lecturer in the Psychology of Kindness, who will share her findings from the BBC Kindness Test – a mass public science project on kindness carried out in partnership with the University of Sussex.

Together we’ll explore some of the study’s findings including whether kindness is viewed as weakness, its relationship to burnout, and the barriers to behaving kindlier.

You’ll leave with a fresh perspective of the role of kindness in your workplace, and how to apply that for the benefit of your team, your business, and your own career.

This event will give you a chance to get up close and personal with insightful, strategic, and motivating thinkers. Come prepared to park your prejudices and preconceptions at the door. Immerse yourself in a topic to which you may not have paid much attention before and come away with a sprinkling of magic dust from an expert at the top of their game that will have a very positive impact on your future thinking.

We’ll provide drinks and nibbles from 4:00 pm at Projects new event space, The Globe. The talk runs from 4:30-5:30, after which you can head off into the night or – if you’re as inspired as we believe you will be – stay for another drink, apply your fresh infusion of insider insights, and network with like-minded business leaders.

About the speakers

Dr Gillian Sandstrom is a Senior Lecturer in the Psychology of Kindness, and the Director of the Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness. Her PhD research on minimal social interactions was inspired by the smile-and-wave relationship she developed with a woman who worked on a hot dog stand while at university in Canada.

Nicky McCrudden founded McCrudden Training: a multi-award winning, Sussex-based, management training company in 2010. After success in a number of national, industry awards, Nicky sought a new challenge. Having been inspired by the challenges and opportunities she’d seen across the organisations she’d worked with, Nicky is now conducting doctoral research into the development of compassionate relationships between colleagues.
